Christmas is an expensive time of the year. Many people save months in advance in order to save for presents, parties, travelling home – the list is endless. Decorations can cost a fortune too. A Christmas tree remains an essential decoration in many people’s homes. The Christmas tree just got a whole lot more expensive.

A Japanese jeweller, Ginza Tanaka, has created a Christmas tree out of solid gold. Weighing at around 12 kilograms and measuring in at 2.4 metres, it costs a whopping £1.3 million. The value of the gold is actually £450,000, with the rest going to labour costs. The 24 carat gold tree sits in a jewellery store in the upscale district of Ginza, Tokyo.

Looking closer, it’s decorated with 60 hearts and 100 ribbons made out of, you guessed it, gold. It took four and a half months to make. As you would expect, it looks odd. Well for one thing, it’s not green. Too be honest, I see it more as a gold traffic cone, but that’s just me probably.

Incredibly, it doesn’t come anywhere near the most expensive Christmas tree in the world. That title still belongs to the Emirates Palace hotel in Dubai. The 13 metre high tree alone cost £6,500. But it’s the decorations that really make it worth an estimated £11 million. It’s covered in expensive jewellery like watches, bracelets and necklaces, and includes diamonds, pearls, emeralds and other precious stones.
