For those of you who were present in Edinburgh on Saturday 2nd July 2005 and saw the “drop the debt” campaign – which began in The Meadows… you’ll be familiar with the diversity of agendas at the event.
Suddenly “drop the debt” became “drop capitalism” and “drop polution” or even “drop war” or “drop politics”.
I thought it was sad that so many people came along to Edinburgh for their own purposes, rather than to really help the third world.
This was re-enforced yesterday by the protestors in Edinburgh city centre – allegedly demonstrating an anti-capitalism gesture.
Instead of spending our energy confronting these twits, why don’t we just do a survey before and after the demonstrations with questions like:
Spell capitalism
Define capitalism
Define free trade
Broadcast the results around the world and encourage a higher standard of debate – like an informed one.
I found this resource on my travels, which if you have the energy, may prove interesting…
